Seventh Clovis Escapee Captured

CLOVIS, N.M. (AP) - Clovis police have arrested the seventh of eight men who fled the Curry County jail Aug. 24.

Police Captain Patrick Whitney says 19-year-old Louis Chavez was captured Monday without incident in a vehicle outside a Clovis grocery store after a citizen spotted him. Whitney says Chavez gave officers a false name, but was quickly identified.

He says Chavez told police he'd been in Texas and returned to Clovis just hours before being captured. The inmates had escaped by stealing a key to a plumbing closet, climbing the pipes and cutting a hole in the roof.

Chavez had been held on charges of burglary, larceny and extreme cruelty to animals. Authorities say 24-year-old Edward Salas, a convicted killed, remains at large.
