BIG SPRING - Residents had a scare after seeing bright flare from the Alon USA refinery on Friday evening. Officials told NewsWest 9, however, it was just business as usual.

Alon USA Vice-President David Foster said it's normal to see fire and flare coming from the refinery on a regular basis. He explained that workers regularly turn on and off parts of the facility and test others. However, Big Spring residents called the fire department after seeing more flare than usual.

Foster said officials are still investigating why there was more flare than usual, but he explained that there was no danger to anyone inside or outside the facility. He also said officials stayed in close contact Friday with workers to make sure there were no problems.

There were no reported injuries.
