AUSTIN (AP) - A Carrollton Republican has added his name to the list of candidates challenging House Speaker Tom Craddick for his leadership post.
Burt Solomons filed the necessary paperwork on Tuesday to legally start campaigning for the chamber's top spot. The 150-member House will elect a leader to a two-year term when they
convene for the biennial legislative session in January.
Solomons is the tenth candidate and the fifth Republican to declare his candidacy. Craddick is seeking a fourth term in the post.
House Republicans, including Craddick and Solomons, were expected to attend a two-day retreat at a resort hotel in Bastrop later Tuesday.
House members have become increasingly disenchanted with Craddick's leadership, but so far, viable support for an alternative has not emerged.
