Odessa Man Sentenced for Mail Theft

MIDLAND, Texas (AP) - A three-month prison term has been ordered for a U.S. Postal Service carrier in Odessa who had nearly 2,500 undelivered items at his home.

A federal judge in Midland on Thursday sentenced 26-year-old Daniel Joseph Sanchez.  Sanchez in August pleaded guilty to delaying or destroying hundreds of mail items.

Prosecutors say Sanchez, from November 2007 through January 2008, took mail to his home and opened some items - seeking money or valuables.  About 2,495 undelivered items were recovered from a storage room at his home in April. The mail was eventually delivered.

Sanchez must serve three years of supervised release after he leaves prison.
