Environmental Group Appeals LES Permit

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - An Albuquerque-based environmental group has gone to the state Court of Appeals over a discharge permit for a uranium enrichment plant near Eunice.  Citizens Against Radioactive Dumping says it feels like state officials ignored its concerns about the permit.

The state Water Quality Commission in April upheld the New Mexico Environment Department's decision in favor of the permit for the Louisiana Energy Services facility.  The 1.5 billion dollar National Enrichment Center will make fuel for commercial nuclear power plants.

CARD's appeal filed last week alleges the department and the water commission process was not fair and impartial.  CARD contends the LES application was incomplete in surveying the area surrounding the site, but that CARD's testimony was discarded.
