ANDREWS COUNTY - If a threat strikes Andrews, everyone in town will know, and the city can do it with the click of a button.
The massive notification system notifies all residents about possible threats and dangers through electronic devices
"Any type of emergency that would require either a targeted notification say a gas line leak in a neighborhood and we needed to evacuate just a certain area, we can target that area and notify those people," Mike Cook with Andrews Emergency Management, said.
And it does this through cell phones, text messages, and e-mails.
"We can notify the entire community for something along the line of say a wildfire that is headed toward town or that nature; it would also be used for various weather emergencies," Cook said.
The system is so effective that it can send up to 400,000 30 second messages in only 30 minutes, but notify residents isn't the only thing that this system does it also sends special messages for the hearing impaired and helps law enforcement officers help find missing children.
"You have a 4 or 5 yr old that goes missing; we can put out a notification in a broad area in just a matter of minutes to help us locate that child," Cook added.
A new community service that to these people is simply indispensable.
"I just moved from Hobbs, New Mexico and being a new resident, we just bought a house 2 wks ago and being new to the town makes me feel sure and confident for me and my family that they are offering a program like that," Resident Sara Ellis, said.
"A wonderful idea, to protect not only senior citizens, but all the people in the community," Resident Monica Boyd, said.
