Hearing Set for Midland Soldier Accused of Murder

A federal judge has set a hearing to decide whether to bar from trial statements a former Army soldier made after being arrested on sexual assault and murder charges.

PADUCAH, Ky. (AP) - A federal judge has set a hearing to decide whether to bar from trial statements a former Army soldier made after being arrested on sexual assault and murder charges.

U.S. District Judge Thomas B. Russell scheduled the hearing for Oct. 29 in Louisville after a request from attorneys for 22-year-old Steven D. Green. The attorneys filed a motion last week asking Russell to exclude anything Green said about the attack and killing of an Iraqi girl and the slaying of her family after his May 2006 arrest.

Green, of Midland, Texas, was deployed in Iraq with the 101st Airborne Division when authorities say the assault took place.  Green is scheduled to face trial on April 27, 2009. He faces a possible death sentence if convicted.
