Woman Convicted of Smuggling Drugs into Lea County Jail

LOVINGTON, N.M. (AP) - An Albuquerque woman convicted of smuggling heroin into the Lea County jail will serve 3 and a half years in prison.

Erica Ortiz, 21, was sentenced Monday by state District Judge Gary Clingman. She was convicted of conspiracy to traffic heroin, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and bringing contraband into a place of imprisonment.

Ortiz told the judge she "fell in with the wrong crowd" when the smuggling occurred last year. Clingman rejected a request for leniency by defense attorney Brian Collopy, who said Ortiz is a student and would be an "ideal candidate" for probation because she has no history of felony charges.
