HOBBS, N.M. (AP) - Vice President Dick Cheney is canceling a trip to New Mexico today due to turmoil in the financial markets.

Cheney's office says in a statement Friday that he will remain in Washington so he can assist with legislation to provide a federal bailout that the administration hopes will stabilize financial markets.

Cheney was to have traveled to Hobbs for a private fund-raiser for Republican Congressional candidate Ed Tinsley.

Tinsley says the event will go on as planned without Cheney and attendees can ask to have their $1,000 donations returned.

The campaign will ask Cheney to reschedule the event.

There was no immediate response from Tinsley's campaign on the cancellation.

Tinsley will face Democrat Harry Teague for the Second District seat.
