MIDLAND COUNTY - After a summer of picking up trash, painting county building, and community service, Midland County says their new inmate work program continues to be a big success.
Many low-risk inmates are now being sentenced to community service projects instead of taking up cell space.
Midland Sheriff Gary Painter says, it's saving the county quite a bit of money, because they're not eating or sleeping at the jail.
The offenders stay at home and are assigned work projects.
If they don't show up, they face a heftier sentence.
Painter says they've collected 500 bags of trash so far.
