ODESSA- Hundreds of miles from the hurricane ravaged coast some families who were forced to flee are now in the Permian Basin looking for help. Odessa Links Executive Director Grace Valencia tells NewsWest 9 they've gotten calls from ten families who need assistance and Catholic Charities an organization Odessa Links works closely with is also dealing with a handful of families from southeast Texas.
Valencia says the 211 information line is directing the families to Odessa Links, but she says the funding is not there to help them.
"We'll continue to take your calls to get you to the help you need," Valencia said.
Valencia is following orders from the Texas Attorney General's office and instructing families to contact FEMA at 800-621-3362 because no resources have been allocated to West Texas.
"They've got nothing," Valencia said, "They're looking for food, something that they can microwave. They've run out of money for hotel, they're looking for either shelters or ways to extend their stay at a hotel."
If you would like to help they're looking for things like gas cards, nonperishable foods and microwaveable foods.
