Lubbock Shut Down by Heavy Rain

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - Heavy rain that's been saturating Lubbock -- is not related to Hurricane Ike.  National Weather Service meteorologist Ron McQueen told The Associated Press early today that another storm is to blame.

McQueen, who said the Lubbock area received nearly 7.5 inches of rain in the previous 24 hours, is getting soaked because of a Pacific storm -- Tropical Depression Lowell.  No injuries were reported.

McQueen says weekend rainfall associated with Ike is expected to miss Lubbock.  Meanwhile, Lubbock Mayor Tom Martin says he plans to declare a state of emergency due to the heavy rain and flooding.

Some high-water rescues have taken place. About 100 buildings suffered flood damage.  Texas Tech University and area schools have canceled classes today.
