Evacuations Issued for Parts of Houston, Beaumont Areas

Millions of people in coastal areas have been told to leave as Hurricane Ike approaches the Texas coast.

HOUSTON - Parts of Harris County are now under a mandatory evacuation order. Neighboring counties on the coast have also issued evacuation orders.

A mandatory evacuation order has also been issued for Jefferson and Orange counties in the Beaumont area due to the threat of Hurricane Ike.

A hurricane watch was in effect from Cameron, La., to Port Mansfield. Forecasters said hurricane conditions were possible within the watch area by late Friday.

Ike's projected path inched northward up the coast on Wednesday taking the storm away from the Coastal Bend and Corpus Christi and closer to the millions of people in the greater Houston metro area.
