CARLSBAD, N.M. (AP) - A 3-year-old Carlsbad boy has drowned in the Pecos River south of Brantley Lake.

Eddy County Sheriff's Captain Leon Newman says Xander Dillard died (Monday) after he disappeared from a family gathering along the river.

Family members told deputies the boy was playing on the bank when they noticed he was gone. They found him in the water a short distance away.

Newman says two Boy Scout scoutmasters who happened to be on the scene tried cardiopulmonary resuscitation, but couldn't revive the boy.

The child was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
