Bond Set for Lovington Murder Suspect

LOVINGTON, NEW MEXICO - A family fight landed a former Lovington Police Officer on the other side of the law.

Bond has been set for 23-year-old Jake Shirley who is charged with murdering his father.

New Mexico State Police say Shirley is being held at the Lea County Detention Center on a $250,000 cash only bond.

Authorities say last thursday, officers found 48-year-old Jimmy Shirley in his home with a gunshot wound to the head.

Investigators say Jake Shirley shot his father after watching him hit his mother.

Shirley's father was pronounced dead after being rushed to the Lea County Hospital.

He is now charged with an open count of murder.
