MARTIN COUNTY - Fire fighters are still mopping up hot spots after a downed power line started a big blaze just north of Midland on Sunday. The fire is now 75 percent contained.
Firefighters tell NewsWest 9, the fire threatened several homes, but the homeowners stayed behind feverishly fighting the flames with their garden hoses.
Fire crews from Midland, Lenorah, Stanton, and the Texas Forest Service all showed up to fight the fire just after 4 Sunday afternoon.
The fire started on Highway 349 in Martin County.
Firefighters dubbed the blaze "The Mabee Fire," and say it moved quickly because of the wind.
The blaze has burned 2,895 acres destroying one shed and directly threatening several homes, but crews were able to act quickly to stop it from spreading.
Members of the Texas Forest Service say the job is now left to local firefighters.
No word on why the power line went down.
No one was injured.
