HOBBS, NEW MEXICO - An SUV slammed into a house in Hobbs early Friday morning after the driver fled from police.

Hobbs police say an officer attempted to catch up to a Ford Explorer that was speeding near Dunnam and Douglas Streets. The SUV then recklessly sped off.

The officer decided to stop pursuing the SUV because the driver was going so fast. A short time later police found the Ford Explorer had struck the side of a house at the corner of Houston and Palace Streets. The SUV had also hit a telephone pole, a fence and a large tree.

The driver has been identified as 32-year-old Vicente Orona of Hobbs. He was trapped inside the vehicle for a time. He was taken to a Lubbock hospital and is in serious condition.

Hobbs police say Orona had an outstanding arrest warrant for failure to pay fines on a DWI charge. The investigation into the crash continues.
