MIDLAND - Bill Dingus has resigned from the Midland City Council. Dingus says he will soon take legal steps to restore his eligibility to run for State Representative.
Last week a federal judge in Waco ruled that Dingus could not run against State Representative Tom Craddick because he had not resigned from the city council before filing to run for the legislature.
The judge also dismissed a lawsuit filed by the Texas Democratic Party of Dingus' eligibility.
"I am compelled to resign in response to actions taken by the leaders of the Republican Party of Texas, actions that I consider contrary to the basic nature of democracy. Their efforts to remove me from the ballot as a candidate for the Texas House of Representatives should cause deep concern for every citizen who values our freedom of choice," Dingus said in a press release.
Dingus has retained an Austin lawyer who is an expert in Texas election law.
