ODESSA - An Odessa Police officer is on paid administrative leave after shooting a suspect who allegedly tried to run him down.

Corporal Michael Caldwell was among the officers responding to a call about a fight around four sunday morning on the 1800 block of 42nd Street.

Caldwell found the suspects a few blocks away and got out of his patrol car.

That's when a car suddenly charged and hit him.

Caldwell drew his weapon and fired one shot, hitting the passenger, 29-year-old Jaime Varela.

Twenty minutes later, Varela showed up at the hospital with a bullet wound to his shoulder.

Police later tracked down the car he was in parked outside the Hemingway House Apartment Complex.

They arrested the driver, 23-year-old Raul Natividad Lara Junior.

He is booked on aggravated assault against a public servant.

Corporal Caldwell has been placed on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of an investigation.
