HOBBS, NEW MEXICO - Gunshots ring out in Hobbs as a felony drug suspect and Hobbs Police engage in a gun battle on a city street.

The gunfight broke out just after two Thursday afternoon near Main and 8th Street, and involved 23-year-old Larry Williams of Hobbs.

Luckily, no one was hit in the exchange of bullets, but police did manage to take down Williams who's already wanted for three counts of trafficking cocaine.

Hobbs Police and the Lea County Drug Task Force say they were conducting an undercover operation when Williams took off running.

He then, allegedly, turned and started firing at the officers with a handgun.

Right now, his only charge is for the outstanding drug warrants, but more serious charges could be filed.

The two officers involved are on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation which is standard procedure.
