BIG SPRING - Continuing coverage on a fire that ravaged a south side subdivision in Big Spring.
The fire broke out shortly after four Monday afternoon in a brushy area, and quickly spread toward houses in the Kentwood and Highlands neighborhoods.
At least two helicopters were on site helping firefighters battle the enormous blaze that burned out of control for several hours.
Officials informed NewsWest 9 that dozens of homes were evacuated.
Two homes were destroyed, and one sustained severe damage.
One homeowner we spoke with tried to get as many items out of his home as possible, right before it went up in flames.
"We grabbed a few photos. There was a friend of ours up here, he helped us get a few things, and it was just on top of us before we knew what happened," John Johnston, who lost his home in fire, told NewsWest 9.
Midland and Garden City Fire Deparmtents were also on hand helping Big Spring firefighters.
For now, fire officials continue investigating the cause of the fire.
