MIDLAND - The basin is home to a new, state of the art medical facility.
Midland Memorial Hospital is celebrating the opening of its Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine.
The center features hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
It involves patients breathing-in pure oxygen inside a chamber assisting in the healing process of wounds.
Doctors say this technology will speficifally aid in treating diabetic wounds.
"The thing is there are so many diabetics in this area, especially in Texas, and there are thousands of wounds in this area that are not being treated or that will benefit from this type of treatment, these chambers have been clinically proven to help with diabetic wounds," Phillip Mammen, Director of Wound Management, said.
This new technology is also effective in fighting certain types of infections and improves circulation.
Doctors say many patients have been able to avoid amputations because of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
