KNOWLES, NEW MEXICO - The Lea County Sheriff's Department tells NewsWest 9 they are currently evacuating homes due to a large fire near the Knowles community, which is located north of Hobbs.

The evacuations effect homes from Lovington Highway to Knowles, and Stiles Road to Alabama Road.  We do not know at this time how many people live in that area.

The fire has now jumped State Highway 132 near Knowles and is heading east toward the state line.

Highway 132 north of Hobbs has been closed, parts of State Highway 18 northwest of Hobbs are also closed due to dense smoke, and Highway 483 from Lovington to U.S. 62/180 is also closed.

We do not know at this time how many people live in that area.
