JEFF DAVIS COUNTY - 600 acres in Jeff Davis County gone up in flames.

Right now, firefighters are launching an air attack against the big blaze that's near the McDonald Observatory.

So far, no homes in the area have been burned, but there are homes in the area.

The fire started Wednesday morning around 7:30.

So far, we're told about 600 acres have burned in what the Forest Service is calling the Parabella fire.

As of now, fire officials tell NewsWest Nine there are about 20 homes within an eighth of a mile from the flames, and the subdivision is about a mile away.

Earlier this afternoon, winds were pushing the fire closer to that subdivision, but as of the last report, the fire while it has burned more acreage, the fire has slowed its trek toward the homes.

An air-tanker and a heli-tanker are dropping water on the flames right now as firefighters try to get the flames under control.

So far, no one has been hurt and no buldings have burned.
