Fires Rage in Area Sunday, Midland Woman Severely Burned

MIDLAND COUNTY - Sunday was very busy for fire crews around the Permian Basin. It also proved dangerous for some residents.

A 28-year-old woman was severly burned when her trailer caught fire Sunday afternoon in the 1300 block of Cuthbert in Midland. Residents in the area tell NewsWest9 the woman ran out of the home on fire. She has been taken to a hospital in Lubbock for treatment.

That fire destroyed two trailers on Cuthbert and spread to several other structures in the area. Some residents had to be evacuated while crews battled the blazes.

A major grassfire burned all afternoon and evening near the Martin and Midland County line off of Highway 349. Over 2,000 acres burned and two homes were evacuated.

The Texas Forest Service, Martin County, Midland County, Midland volunteers and the Northeast Volunteer Fire Department are worked to fight that blaze. Helicopters dropped thousands of gallons of water from the sky.

Highway 349 north of Midland was closed for several hours as crews worked the fire. The highway and the intersection of Big Spring and Loop 250 were reopened Sunday evening.

Odessa area crews were also busy and worked several small fires in Ector County.
