Suspect Involved in Tuesday Standoff Charged With Murder

ODESSA - The man at the center of the four hour standoff Tuesday night in Odessa sits behind bars charged with murder.  

21-year-old Billy Gene Harris Junior has been been charged with first degree murder in the shooting death 24-year-old Cornelius Jubar Washington.

The shooting happened early Tuesday morning outside Billy's Zodiac Club in the 400 block of south Dixie.

Washington died a short time later at Medical Center Hospital.  

Police tell newswest nine, Harris was spotted at the La Promesa Apartments Tuesday afternoon, a little before 4:30, carrying a sawed-off shotgun.  

When the police showed up, we're told Harris dropped the shotgun and ran into the first open apartment he saw.  

That's when the standoff began.  

More than four hours later, Harris surrendered after the SWAT team fired tear gas into the apartment.  

In addition to the murder charge, Harris is also charged with being a felon in possession of a gun.  

Harris remains in jail on a 90 thousand dollar bond.
