BIG SPRING - There won't be a murder conviction for the man accused of killing a Big Spring man last May.
Before testimony could begin in the trial of Steven Glen Hildebrand, he made a plea deal.
Steven Glen Hildebrand plead guilty to a lesser charge of aggravated assault for his part in the death of 59-year-old James David Boettcher.
Howard County District Attorney Hardy Wilkerson tells NewsWest Nine, Hildebrand admitted to hitting Boettcher, but never meant to kill him.
Instead of trying to prove he intended to commit murder, prosecutors made a deal that made sure Hildebrand would see prison time.
Hildebrand was sentenced to 14 years behind bars.
