MARTIN COUNTY - The skies over Martin County darkened friday afternoon for several hours after a massive brush fire spread quickly toward Midland County.

It broke out around one Friday afternoon, just west of Highway 349.

The eight thousand acre fire forced evacuations and closed roads.

Fire crews from Lenorah all the way to the state of Virginia turned out to help.

According to the Texas Forest Service, since January 20 thousand acres of land have been destroyed in this area because of fires.

And the high winds didn't help, there were gusts that reached up to 25 miles an hour making the conditions difficult and dangerous for the firefighters.

Fire crews also used a helicopter to view and assess the damage from above.

The Texas Forest Service will be surveying the exact amount of land affected by Friday's large blaze.
