ODESSA- On the sixth floor at Medical Center Hospital, Hector Roman Jr. is recovering after a major crash Thursday night. The All American diver, reportedly dozed off and went right through a fence. A three inch pipe lodged in his chest.

"Doctors told me it's a miracle," said his father Hector Roman, Sr., "When the pipe went through it missed his heart by a half an inch, it missed his lung by an inch. His main artery was pinched against the pipe, so it kept it from rupturing. If it would have ruptured he would have only had three minutes to live he would have been gone."

Hector Roman Sr. says the teen was on his way home after dropping off a friend, when he dozed off and his van went right off the road.

"I am just glad he is alive," Roman Sr. said.

Roman Jr. spent much of the last two days in intensive care, today doctors moved him to a room at Medical Center Hospital.

"Hector was not only an excellent diver but also a big part of our relays," said Terry Morse, Head Swim Coach for Pecos High School, "he had a really good chance this year of going all the way to state."

Roman Sr. says he'll need more surgery and rehabilitation.
