WINKLER COUNTY - Winkler County dealing with wind whipped flames.

Around 6:30, the Winkler County Volunteer Fire Department responded to a grassfire in between Monahans and Kermit.

After ten minutes the fire was so bad, they had to call in assistance from Monahans, Wink, and Wickett.

"The wind was a big factor in this fire.  It started north of Hobb Road.  It jumped Hobb Road, went south maybe two miles on the south side of Hobb Road, and that's when we finally got to the head of the fire, and got it contained.  It's undetermined at this time what started it.  The winds a big factor in this, trucks driving, trains, cigarette butts, anything could have started this," Cody Jimenez with the Monahans Volunteer Fire Department, said.

Officials still aren't sure how the fire started, but the wind spread it quickly.

At one point the fire jumped a county road and spread more than  2 miles.

It took them over 2 hours to get the blaze under control.
