DALLAS - The Dallas Morning News is reporting that the FutureGen project could still come to Texas after all.
Yesterday, NewsWest9 reported that the U.S. Department of Energy told members of Congress from Illinois that it would pull its support for building the $1.8 billion power plant in Mattoon, Ill.
The Dallas Morning News reports that the department could scale back the project, and Texas might compete again to host a facility that's smaller or includes slightly different technology.
Odessa and Jewett, in Central Texas, had both hoped to land the plant before Mattoon was chosen.
Officials with the Odessa Chamber of Commerce expressed doubt Wednesday morning that the project will wind up coming to Texas.
Illinois officials have vowed to fight for the project.
Illinois Senator Dick Durbin has accused Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman of "cruel deception" by creating false hope in a project that he did not intend to fund or support.
