Department of Energy Pulls Support For FutureGen

Staff Report
The Associated Press

The Energy Department is dropping support for the FutureGen project -- citing ballooning costs.

Two sites in Texas, including Odessa, had been finalists for the emissions-free power plant, which was granted to Illinois.

DOE officials told federal lawmakers today it plans to pull its support for the 1.8 billion dollar project.

The Department of Energy would not publicly divulge its intentions about FutureGen or discuss what was said during the private meeting with lawmakers.

An announcement is expected later this week.

Two sites in Texas - near Jewett and Odessa - were among the finalists for the project recently awarded to a site in Mattoon, Illinois.

Illinois Senator Dick Durbin says the state's congressional delegation will make the case for FutureGen directly to President Bush.
