You may not know it, but we have vast reserves in oil, but it's found in shale, that's a type of rock.
So far, there has not been a good way to get it out, until now.
Apparently, cooking it out of these rocks does the trick.
Raytheon Corporation has just sold technology that uses microwaves to cook the oil out of shale rocks which can then be picked up by an oilfield service company.
Other companies are developing oil shale extraction methods as well.
So why go to all the trouble to cook the oil out of these rocks?
Get this, just the rocks on Western Federal lands in the United States hold up to three times the amount of oil that's in the country of Saudi Arabia.
If that much oil could start being extracted, it means less reliance on foreign countries, and cheaper prices for you at the pumps.
