A local Congress Memeber was honored by local and state police officers on Wednesday.
State Representative Buddy West was honored for his efforts in getting a bill passed, making it illegal to kill a service animal while in the line of duty.
The whole idea behind this bill came about when K-9 officer Pinto from Andrews was killed in the line of duty.
Mr. West says even though there was a pre existing law, the punishment didn't fit the crime.
"It had been suggested but it was a very minor, Class 3 Felony to injure or maim, but that was just a slap, and so we increased it to Class 2," Rep. West said.
