MIDLAND- It wasn't a bird or Superman but some Tall City residents got quite a show. A single engine Cessna type plane skirted the runway at the Midland Airpark, before it landed on the South Service Road. The couple on board, Cliff and Kathy Rowe of Odessa were on there way back from Riodoso, NM. When Cliff tried to land the plane it belly flopped just missing Loop 250. The pair were sent to Midland Memorial Hospital where they are in stable condition.
Loop 250 remained open as TXDOT, Midland Sheriff, Midland Police and Fire departments worked the scene. The investigation will be conducted by the Flight Standard District Office, or FSDO out of Lubbock.
"The flight pattern is right over these houses, and you don't worry about it too much," said Stephen Lintzen, who lives in the neighborhood, but today it was a little scary to see the plane so close to Loop 250.
"It looks like he might have tried to land on the loop," said Lintzen.
"It did take quite a blow when it hit the ditch," said Marv Esterly, director of airports for the City of Midland, "it's Saturday afternoon and there isn't a lot of traffic on that service road, so it could have been a lot worse than what it was."
A crane hoisted the plane off the road around 1PM Saturday.
