The jury finds a Hobbs man guilty of shooting and killing an 11 year old, but they're not calling it for murder.

Friday night's verdict in a Lovington district court could put Maldonado behind bars for five and a half years.

Our mobile news bureau, sat in on Friday's trial.

Maldonado was charged with shooting an 11-year old boy dead last December.

Police say he opened fire on an SUV, and killed 11 year old Lawrence Juarez.

The boy was sitting inside the vehicle with his father, and his father's girlfriend.

Maldonado has always claimed the shooting was in self-defense, but authorities say they never found any weapons in the SUV.

A judge will sentence Maldonado on December 17th.
