Emotional and graphic testimony in a Lovington courtroom as the murder trial of Carlos Maldonado got underway on Wednesday.

Security was extremely tight at the Lea County Courthouse, especially on the second floor.

Maldonado is accused of killing an eleven year old on December 6th of last year.

Lawrence Juarez was shot to death in front of his uncle's house in Hobbs.

The uncle, David Juarez took the stand on Wednesday telling the court in great detail about the events of that night.

He said Carlos or "C.J." Maldonado pulled up, got out of a Cadillac, and armed with a gun in each hand, he opened fire on a black Durango.

Inside the SUV were Lawrence, his father, and his father's girlfriend.

Lawrence was shot in the head.

Maldonado's attorney claims it was self defense.

The prosecution has charged Maldonado with second degree murder and tampering with evidence.

We will continue to follow this trial, and we will have a crew in Lovington as the testimony continues on Thursday.
