SANTA FE (AP) - The Department of Justice is continuing monitoring the Santa Fe County jail.

A three-year monitoring agreement expires today, but a new two-year agreement starts tomorrow.

The Justice Department in 2004 concluded that jail conditions violated inmates' constitutional rights.

The agency will continue to monitor the jail because it says the county still was not in compliance.

The latest pact includes a provision for early termination if the county maintains substantial compliance for a year.

County officials disagreed with the original findings, which primarily covered access to medical and mental health care.

But they agreed to inspections and other conditions to avoid litigation.
