BROWNWOOD, Texas (AP) - The Texas Youth Commission has moved more than 100 boys to an all-girl unit to make room for inmates from a closed TYC prison in West Texas.

Teresa Stroud is superintendent at the Ron Jackson Juvenile Correction Complex in Brownwood. She says the transferred boys are being housed in three areas not being used by female inmates in Brownwood. That's despite efforts earlier this year to make that unit an all-girl TYC facility.

The boys were transferred from a juvenile prison in Mart, near Waco. That made room for inmates from the Coke County Juvenile Justice Center, near San Angelo.

The state closed the privately managed Coke County prison last week and canceled an 8 million-dollar annual contract with the GEO Group. That's after the TYC found inmates were being kept in filthy conditions.
