HOBBS, N.M. - Hobbs police Captain Sean Bates will take over as interim police chief at the end of the month.

That's when Chief Johnny Gonzales retires.

Gonzales has been with the police department for 20 years and had been chief for the last two.

Bates has been with the Hobbs Police Department since 1991 and was promoted to captain last year.
