DALLAS (AP) - Two police officers responding to what they thought was a wreck on a downtown freeway early this morning were caught in a shootout that killed three people and wounded a
patrolman and another person.

Dallas police identified the shooting victims as 22-year-old Robert Daniel Langston, of Duncanville, and 24-year-old Jesus Reyes Terrazas Junior, of Dallas. They had apparently stopped to render aid at an accident on a freeway by downtown Dallas.

Authorities say the suspect, 20-year-old Nick A. Salinas, of Cedar Hill, killed himself with the shotgun used in the shootings. Police say they don't know why Salinas started shooting and
probably never will.

Witnesses told investigators they stopped to help a motorist on the side of the highway when someone inside the car shot at them.  Senior Corporal Jerry Poston was shot when he arrived at the scene.

He and another man who stopped to help, 30-year-old Barry David Smith, of Fort Worth, were hospitalized in serious but stable condition.
