He's been a teacher, a principal, and an administrator. This week, he took charge as the interim superintendent.
"I'm excited, I mean, excited about the opportunity, and the challenge," explained Hector Mendez. "It's a little scary, but at the same time it's exciting."
Last Thursday, the ECISD school board appointed Mendez head of school administration for four to six weeks. While he didn't plan on being superintendent, he said he wants school officials to work together to make the district better.
"And do what we need to do, and focus our efforts there, to create the school district, the excellent school district that we can, and move forward," said Mendez.
With 32 years of experience in education, Mendez said he thinks he can do a good job. Growing up in Big Lake, he said he learned how important it is to serve others, which is why he thinks he was so interested in education. Mendez also said he knows where the school district should keep its concentration.
"Focus on the students. In other words, we have a task to excellence in equity and education for all students. So, how are we going to organize, what are we going to do administratively, to make that happen not only at this level, but for it to go down to the school level," explained Mendez.
