Smoking marijuana in New Mexico is now legal as long as it's for medical reasons.

Starting this month, patients with chronic diseases such as cancer or galucoma can get a prescription for pot.

The state department of health has until October 1st to issue rules to the public regarding distribution procedures.

Here's the tricky part to the new law.

Right now it's illegal in New Mexico to grow marijuana.

That means the state has to first get approval from the government to begin planting.
