A horse in Lea County, New Mexico has tested positive for the west nile virus.

Veterinarian Mary Cap says the horse was so weak it could no longer stand.

The horse was put down.

Cap says despite the finding, the number of west nile cases has gone down.

She believes that's because many horse owners are now vaccinating their animals.

West nile is a mosquito borne illness that can also strike humans.
