Carnival Cruise passenger jumps overboard, dies

HOUSTON (AP) - An 18-year-old man died today after jumping off a cruise ship into the Gulf of Mexico.

Officials with Carnival Cruise Lines said the unidentified man jumped from the Ecstasy about 7:35 this morning, said cruise line spokesman Vance Gulliksen. A search started and the U-S Coast Guard was notified, he said.

The man was found about a half-hour later and brought back on board the 70,000-ton vessel, where he was pronounced dead, Gulliksen said.

The cruise, with 2,052 passengers, left Galveston yesterday. The trip continues, and the ship is expected to reach Cozumel, Mexico,tomorrow, Gulliksen said. It is scheduled to return to Galveston on Thursday.
