Odessa, Texas- A new Texas law will require all Day Care employees, undergo fingerprinting starting September 1st.
"The only identifiers that are really one hundred percent sure are biometric identifiers like retina or fingerprints.and other things that can not be faked and can not be changed," said Special Agent Bill Vanderland, of the FBI.
While Vanderland will be happy if the new requirement stops just one potential threat he knows it's not full proof.
"It's not going to be a magic bullet that automatically fixes everything, but it is a step to knowing who we are really putting in contact with kids," he said.
It may cost Day Care centers up to fifty dollars per employee. Fingerprints will be taken at the start of employment and every year after.
"The profits margin for a Day Care center is not that much to begin with and when you start piling on cost that the center is going to have to absorb those costs are going to have to go to the parents," said Linda Coggins, of Linda's Little Angels in Odessa.
The industry is plagued by high turnover rates, "In an average year my employees will tell you i go through quite a few employees that work half a day, one day," said Coggins.
Robin Lebeouf is happy with the new requirement.
"I am comfortable with the background checks and fingerprinting because otherwise we don't know who is taking care of our children," said Lebeouf.
