TABC conducts “Beer Sting,” to make sure stores don’t sell alcohol to underage kids

Twenty locations put to the test on Thursday, all for one reason, to see if stores in the Permian basin would sell beer to a minor.

"You know, these are compliance checks, we're not out to trick them, we're just checking for compliance," says Agent Rene Carrasco.

Here's the plan. Officers from the Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission sent a 15-year old girl into convenient stores selected prior to the sting. An agent followed her into the store to see if the clerk would sell her beer.

Charles Hodges, an administrator with Stop DWI Inc, joined TABC on the sting. His organization is dedicated to keeping alcohol out of kids' hands.

"This is what we hope to get across to the public, and to the clerk in the store, it's a good idea to check the ID. If you look at it and you think it's fake or whatever, don't sell it," warns Hodges.

But there were no tricks or fake ID's in this operation. All the clerk had to do was to check the ID. Newswest 9 followed police as they busted two cashiers who didn't even ask for one.

Both clerks who sold the beer to the teenager will be charged with a class A misdemeanor. The stores will also get a citation. Officials say these beer stings aren't meant to get people in trouble, but to make the public aware of the law.

"Operations like this are a good education tool as far as we're concerned because it alerts the public to the face that, yeah, there are people watching," says Hodges.

TABC conducts these stings year round and will be out in full force this summer, making sure kids don't get their hands on any alcohol.

NewsWest Nine called both stores that were busted.   We were told the manger at the Kent Kwik was out of town and unavailable to comment.   We were unable to get a hold of anyone at the 7-11 on Midland drive.
