2 Big Spring High School students arrested after taking gun to campus

BIG SPRING, TX (KWES) - Two Big Spring High School students have been arrested after taking a gun to campus on Friday.

At approximately 10 A.M., administrative personnel were notified by a concerned parent that a student may be in possession of a firearm and Big Spring Police Department officers were dispatched shortly after.

According to police, BSHS administrative staff immediately investigated the allegations, found the student, removed him from the classroom and escorted him to the office.

School staff then secured a Stallard Arms Model JS 9mm pistol from his backpack, which was not loaded and no ammunition was found.

Police took the juvenile into custody and charged him with Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon a Class A Misdemeanor and Places Weapons Prohibited a 3rd Degree Felony.

BSPD Criminal Investigations Division investigated and found the 16-year-old was given the firearm by another 15-year-old student of BSHS.

He was also taken into custody, transported to the BSPD and charged with Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon a Class A Misdemeanor and Places Weapons Prohibited a 3rd Degree Felony.

In a release from the school, the BS Independent School District Superintendent stated, "The safety of our students and staff is always the District's highest priority. We are very grateful to the Big Spring Police Department for its prompt attention to this matter and the parent who contacted the District this morning."

The school also stated all required actions concerning this matter have been taken by the District, but they will continue to work with all authorities as needed.
