They stated," In response to UIL's policies and recommendations regarding the incident that occurred in Marfa between the Sanderson and Marfa Varsity Football teams, the Sanderson HS Varsity Football team will not be playing Garden City JV in Balmorhea on Thursday, September 13, 2018."
Marfa Independent School District tells us that they have forfeited their scheduled game for this week. They were supposed to play Nueces Canyon.
Marfa ISD says they were not asked to forfeit by the UIL but following the incident,"we suspended various players and because of these suspensions, we are unable to field a team."
The incident occurred during the Marfa vs. Sanderson game on Friday, September 7.
Marfa police confirmed that Sanderson Coach David Donnell was arrested on a class A misdemeanor assault charge.
Police said that Donnell tried to separate some of the players and is being investigated for throwing one of the players to the ground. According to police, a student-athlete was taken by ambulance from the field.
As of this afternoon, Sanderson ISD said that Donnell is employed by Terrell County ISD under a one year contract through the end of the 2018-2019 school year and that he is not currently on leave from employment.
