He initially was the drug prosecutor and then went on to handle felony cases in the 70th Judicial District Court. In 2011, he moved to Lubbock to serve as an Assistant U. S. Attorney, where he prosecuted Federal cases. Justin Cunningham returned home to serve as the First Assistant District Attorney of Ector County in 2015.
Ector County District Attorney Bobby Bland stated: "Justin Cunningham was a great husband, father, friend and prosecutor. He was the most dedicated champion of justice that I have ever known. He was well-liked and respected equally by fellow prosecutors, defense attorneys, and law enforcement. His passing leaves a huge void with his family, his friends, our office and in our community. Justin Cunningham accomplished more good in his short life than most others do in a life twice as long."
